Hinge Issues |
I love the look and feel of this cover.
Although I am aware of issues in the past of side hinged covers causing cracks, based on the many raving reviews of this cover, I thought I had found a solution. I purchased it about 2 weeks ago, and have been very careful not to bend the cover back, and to always open it from the front.
My Dad came over, and I was excitedly telling him that I had found a side hinge cover that didn't crack the side of the Kindle, that the issues had been resolved, and that I was happy with my decision to spend the 50 dollars. He picked up my Kindle, in it's case, peeked at the side and proceeded to show me a small crack at the top hinge spot. I was devastated. If there are already cracks appearing after 2 weeks, I can not imagine what it will be like after 2 months, or 2 years.
I do not think there is any way I could have been any more careful with my Kindle. It has stayed in the cover since the first day I put it on. I have not taken it anywhere yet, I have not even had the chance to read it outside, or on a vacation, or anywhere but my favorite reading chair, at home. I am still in that *careful because it's so new* stage.
I do not think this is the result of faulty craftsmanship, the cover is beautiful. I think this is still an issue with the Kindle, and unfortunately, until Kindle resolves the issues with the side not supporting the weight properly, side hinge covers will cause cracks. At least this has been my very disappointing experience.
I plan on spending my day researching other covers, and would purchase another Cole Haan with a different hinge design if it was available. |

This leather cover is exactly as I'd hoped it would be. It fits my Kindle 2 (6 inch model) easily. I like the classy appearance and feel of the pebble grain leather, and it smells great, if you like the smell of leather. The original box (packed in a shipping box) is really nice if you are considering this as a gift to someone. |

Luxurious protection for your Kindle! |
This is the first jacket that I bought for my Kindle 2, and will probably be the last. I looked at many, many different types of covers before finally settling on this one, and I am happy I did. Here's why I chose it:
1. The hinge system - I love the clean look of a "naked" Kindle without straps on the corners; it has a beauty of its own when placed in this jacket.
2. The quality - Cole Haan is a premium leather manufacturer, and this is an exceptionally well-made product. I expected no less; you get what you pay for.
3. The beauty - The leather is flawless and has a suppleness and softness to it that is absolutely luxurious and feels heavenly in your hands. And it smells wonderful, like fine leather should.
Sure, it's expensive, even at half price. But in my mind, an expensive investment like the Kindle deserves to be pampered with such a beautiful and quality jacket. My Kindle is my best friend, and goes with me everywhere. Now that it has this beautiful jacket to protect it, I never want to put it down.
That said, I made a few modifications to the cover. First, I love to carry my Kindle in my purse, and this cover has no way to fasten it closed. So I picked up a length of 3/4" black elastic ribbon and made a band for it that I can slip over the jacket before putting it in my bag (the band isn't attached to the jacket). I was using an old hair scrunchie to hold the jacket closed in my purse but the black elastic band looks much nicer. It's just tight enough to hold it securely closed, but not so tight that it leaves an imprint on the leather.
I was also worried about the hinge system cracking my Kindle. I know it's not as much of an issue with a softer jacket like this one, but I love to read in bed and don't want to have to worry if I fall asleep with my Kindle. So I used a few Velcro dots to attach the back of the Kindle to the back of the jacket. Since I don't take my Kindle out of the jacket anyway, it doesn't bother me to stick Velcro to the back of my Kindle. It's worth the extra protection, and the Velcro dots peel easily off of the Kindle anyway. Now, I can carry my Kindle around and fold the jacket back without fear of cracking it.
The modifications I made probably aren't necessary with such a finely made jacket, but it makes me feel much better that I have done everything I can to protect it.
I thought seriously about getting an Oberon jacket, but I wonder if they are as sinfully soft as this one is! This jacket already has me spoiled rotten, and it is well worth the investment. Heh, maybe I'll get an Oberon for Christmas, but this jacket has already taken on a personality of its own as the leather softens with use and molds itself to my Kindle. I don't think I'll ever be able to part with it! |
