Description |
|
See the world from a kid's-eye view with Matilda, a modern fairytale that mixes hilarious humor with the magical message of love. Mrs. Doubtfire's Mara Wilson stars as Matilda, a super-smart little girl who's woefully misunderstood by her parents (Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman), her brother, and an evil school principal. But with the help of a brave best friend and a wonderful teacher, Matilda discovers she doesn't have to get mad to get even. |

Danny DeVito's adaptation of the Roald Dahl book for children is mostly just fine, helped along quite a bit by the charming performance of Mara Wilson (Mrs. Doubtfire) as young Matilda, a brilliant girl neglected by her stupid, self-involved parents (DeVito and Rhea Perlman). Ignored at home, Matilda escapes into a world of reading, exercising her mind so much she develops telekinetic powers. Good thing, too: sent off to a school headed by a cruel principal, Matilda needs all the help she can get. DeVito takes a highly stylized approach that is sometimes reminiscent of Barry Sonnenfeld (director of Get Shorty, a DeVito production), and his judgment is not the best in some matters, such as letting the comic-scary sequences involving the principal go on too long. But much of the film is delightful and funny. --Tom Keogh |

OK for teens and adults, NOT OK for young kids |
The ugly parents are awful. OK, we've seen that before (think Harry Potter and the Dursleys).
The ugly principal is beyond evil - and scary to witness.
The pretty teacher is sweet and kind, but - well - ineffective and helpless. Poor kids.
The teacher tells Matilda a tale of her childhood (TOO MUCH INFORMATION) wherein her mom dies and then her father commits suicide, leaving her an orphan in the care of the evil Aunty Trunchbull. This is where I clicked the movie off and told my 6yr old we're getting rid of this film. "What did he do mama? He killed himself?" Thank you SO much, Danny DeVito, for introducing suicide to the kindergarten set.
Finally, Matilda tells her sweet-but-helpless teacher to "adopt me, Miss Honey!" And voila! just like that, papers are stapled together, parents quickly affix their signatures, and Matilda goes skipping off with her new mother. It takes more than that to adopt a DOG.

Highly enjoyable |
So many movies just suck compared to the books they were derived from, but this movie hardly fails to please. I read the book many years ago and when the movie was announced, I was surprised and curious. I am glad to say that I was not at all disappointed. This movie isn't EXACTLY like the book, but I really can't complain. The book was wonderful, and so is this movie, and I rate it 4.5/5 stars. The only thing that really bothers me is the cover of this DVD. It's a rather poor cover, and doesn't capture the essence of the movie.
There's plenty of humorous moments here. Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman do FANTASTIC jobs with their characters. They're such a incredible couple and their dynamics worked well in this film as they provide plenty of comic humor and make the characters of Mr. and Mrs. Wormwood beautifully. Ms. Honey wasn't quite as I imagined she would be, but her actress did a rather nice job in the role, and Ms. Trunchbull's actress was just perfect. A great character/actor ensemble within a good story truly makes for a wonderful film. |

The movie is fantastic I have seen it before I just wanted my own copy. I purchased it from moviesonsale and I would not recomend them. They said it was used in new condition, well it has some glitches where the digital stop and does nothing for about 15 seconds then continues. If they sell like new that should mean like new without glitches in it. No fault of AMAZON it was MOVIESONSALE. |

I love this! |

I have loved this movie since I first saw it on television when I was a child. I am glad to have the special edition with the additional content. It enhances the movie as well as the world it is set in. |

Hi my name is Kamry Lawson have you ever seen Matilda I consider it to be one of my favorite movies of all time. It's about a little girl who used magic which we know me all want to use magic. The characters names are Matilda, Lavender, Miss Honey, and the mean Trunchbull. Matilda parents were the worse ever imagine your parents leaving you in the car when you were first born. By the time she was three she learned how to cooked pancakes everyday her parents, and brother would walk out, and leave her. When they left she would go to the library and sit in the corner, and read. At the age of seven she went to school. The only reason she got to go was because her dad made a plan with the Trunchbull. On her first day she met a girl named Lavender the two girls were in the same class, and evidently they became great friends. They were both in the same class Matilda favorite teacher was Miss Honey. If you where bad the Trunchbull would put you in the chokey it had holes and nails in the inside of the door. She would lock you in there for hours and leave. Matilda' parents was moving, but she got adopted by Miss Honey the two girls were happy living together. |
