Unfit for purpose |
In all my years, I have never purchased a product that was completely unfit for the purpose for which it was created. This is a first for me.
When I saw the Swiss Army knife logo, I assumed it was because they determined that this manufacturer's quality was up to their standards. They had very high standards in the 20th century (and earlier?), but either their standards have dropped substantially this century, or they don't even check. Either way, I will not purchase another item with this logo. To me, it now signifies inferior quality and incompetence[1]. I sure don't want a knife built to these standards!
To the mouse:
The first thing I noticed was the cheap feel of the construction. The black plastic piece (where my thumb rests) is loose and rattles. Reading the other reviews on this site that mention its lack of durability is discouraging, too, though not surprising after seeing what I did.
In windows with multiple vertical scroll bars, only one scroll bar can be controlled by this mouse. Click and drag on another scroll bar simply results in mad flickering of the scroll control. Likewise if I click on the content in that section and try to use the scroll wheel.
I cannot use any pull-down menus with this mouse. They work perfectly with the mouse pad, any other mouse, or the keyboard. Click with the Daytona II mouse and the menu opens and closes immediately - no selection can be made.
Similar effects can be seen with other widgets. For example, in the Windows Mouse Control Panel, the mouse speed is permanently pushed all the way to the left (slowest setting). If I adjust it with the mousepad, any other mouse, or the keyboard, it works fine. If I so much as move the Daytona II mouse while that window is active, the speed adjustment jumps to the slowest setting - even if that widget does not have the focus.
It is impossible for me to use this mouse as is. I would give this a 0 star rating if I could - an absolute failure.
[1] I see that www.wengerna.com (as listed in the owner's pamphlet) does not list a mouse or daytona as a product as of this writing. Is this product a forgery and NOT created by SwissGear, a "licnesee" (pamphlet spelling) company? If I hear back from Wenger or SwissGear, I will mention their response here.

Breaks down after a week of use. |
|
I bought this mouse, because I own one of the Swiss backpacks, which is a great backpack. But after about a week of use, it started to bug out. The cursor would freeze in position. The scroll wheel would work, and the left and right buttons would work, but the cursor would not move at all. The only way I can get the cursor to work is to turn off the mouse, and then turn it back on. But even then, it only last for maybe 15 seconds, until it freezes up again. |

Save your money |
On the good side, this mouse looks great. It's sleek, it's sexy, and the build speaks of an intelligent, thoughtful designer. There's little in the way of places where dust and gunk can gather. The USB receiver fits neatly into the battery compartment for travel and storage. The scroll wheel has a great feel to it and moves easily.
On the bad side, the life expectancy is ridiculous. I'm fairly gentle with my mouse, and it barely lasted longer than a month. It started running into problems within two weeks. It seems very cheaply made. Ultra-light, all molded plastic. The eye-catching coat of red is already chipping on the right side. In the month that I had it, it went through four sets of batteries, despite my use of the on/off button whenever I got up from the computer for more than five minutes. The receiver has a fairly bright red light on it which flashes rapidly whenever the mouse moves, and often when it isn't. It seems like a minor annoyance, but it can be a big distraction whenever you're in anything but the brightest room.
The Daytona II has style, I'll grant it that, but there's no real substance there. Pass on this purchase and save yourself the trouble. |

broken after 2 weeks |
This product did not last very long...it is constructed rather cheaply and it was broken after 2 weeks of use. Not durable at all.
The wireless USB attachment sticks out a bit too much and was extremely annoying- every time you move the mouse, the thing would flash like crazy...
Battery life on this thing was also pretty bad. After 1 week of use, the battery in the mouse (included out of the package) was dead and the mouse would not connect to the wireless attachment.
Definitely DO NOT purchase if you plan on using this as an everyday mouse . |

Adequate |
Purchased as a gift, so you can likely guess what happened. IT DIDN"T WORK! 2 computers would not recognize the USB attachement. So much for quality control!
Replaced and now using. In general it works okay but feels ligth and cheap, thumb buttons are mushy nearly unusable.
What really got me to write this review is the blinking LED on the USB attachment. How annoying is that, evertime you move the mouse the LED starts flashing. Will use masking tape to fix that.
One positive is it's ability to work on smooth white surface. My Microsoft wireless intelimouse explorer will not work reliable on fore mentioned surface.
So why am I not going to return? It's bright red! Light, though cheap feeling, thumb buttons won't be used and it's not worth the gas to drive down to the store again. |
